The FMA today published the brochure “Fire and Natural Disaster Insurance in Liechtenstein” for the 2025 reporting year. Liechtenstein is one of only a few countries—along with Switzerland—to offer comprehensive insurance coverage against fire and natural disasters for buildings and household property.

In Liechtenstein, assets totaling CHF 31.9 billion are insured against fire and natural hazards—more than four times the gross domestic product. This figure underscores the significant economic importance of this insurance. It is a key component of the country’s comprehensive risk management system, which encompasses preparedness for natural hazards, response to natural disasters, and reconstruction.

As in previous years, strong winds were the most common cause of damage from natural events in 2025, accounting for 125 claims. This was followed by damage caused by hail and flooding. Insured natural hazards include damage caused by natural events such as high water, flooding, storms, hail, avalanches, snow load, rockfalls, falling rocks, and landslides. In fire insurance, lightning strikes were the most common cause of damage. Of a total of 95 claims, 16 were attributable to lightning strikes. The second most common cause of damage was accidental fire. This includes fires caused by matches and lighters, smoking materials, candles, welding and soldering, as well as fireworks. Payments for claims totaled approximately CHF 11.0 million in the 2025 fiscal year. These were broken down into payments for fire insurance claims, totaling approximately CHF 8.4 million, and for natural hazards insurance claims, totaling CHF 2.6 million. Thus, despite a lower number of claims compared to the previous year, the total amount of payments made increased.

The current issue of the brochure features an interview with building appraiser Karl Laternser. An accurate building appraisal is the foundation for optimal insurance coverage. In the interview, Karl Laternser explains the process involved.

The FMA is entrusted with various supervisory functions in the areas of fire and natural hazards insurance and therefore has access to the necessary data. The brochure “Fire and Natural Hazards Insurance in Liechtenstein” is updated annually and is available on the website.
